Installing Risers

Tools needed:

  • Screws
  • Phillips Screwdriver

The screws need to go into the subfloor at least one inch (25 mm). So you need to determine how long your screws need to be so they go through the Haven unit, risers, and higher floor layers making sure at least one inch of the screw go into the subfloor.

    Haven is usually installed with 2 inch (5 cm) screws or anchors. We use those screw because we want over an inch (2.5 cm) of the the screw or anchor to be in the sub floor. If you use risers, this will be the case most likely. You will need to have longer screws.

    In order to find the right length for your screws or anchors, you need to remember one main concept: The screws must go at least one inch (2.5cm) into your subfloor, whether it be hardwood or concrete.

    Take the height of risers you require to properly fit Haven to your door threshold. Add that to the 2 inch (5 cm) requirement for a normal install. So if you have a requirement of .75 inches (2 cm) of riser that means you will need screw or anchors that are 2 inches (5 cm) plus .75 inches (2 cm) or 2.75 inches (7 cm).

  • 2 Placing the Risers

    During the installation process, you will be aware that some of the steps will be different when using the risers. The length of your screws will be longer, and you need to be certain that the holes in your risers lined up with the Haven unit and the pilot holes you drill.

    During the installation process, you might want to tape down your risers so they do not shift during measurement or drilling. Since your risers are not directly attached to the Haven unit, they can and will shift easily during installation.

    Before installing the risers, you should prep each drill hole by threading through one of the screws. This will make it much easier to install later with you have to go through the riser into the floor.

  • 3Weatherizing the Gaps

    Weatherizing the gaps between your riser and floor as well as your Haven unit is advised if your Haven will be in an area that gets of lot of moisture. For instance, if you live in an area that gets snowfall, you should use a proxy or sealant to prevent the moisture from getting in the cracks.
