Test the proper threshold height for HAVEN by placing your unit against your door threshold. Make sure HAVEN is in the unlocked position. The unit is .8 inches high when in the unlocked position. Open door while holding unit in place. Your door should be able to open completely over HAVEN. Medium resistance against weather stripping/- door seal is acceptable.
If your threshold height is below .8 inches, you may have to shorten your door. Before shortening your door, you may be able to remove the weather strip from the bottom of the door. You can purchase an exterior weather strip that attaches to the bottom front of your door and provides excellent protection without requiring you to shorten the door.
If your door passes over HAVEN in the unlocked position, then you need to make sure HAVEN is the right distance from the door. Use the orange spacer included in the box to find the right distance between door and HAVEN when it is in the up and locked position. Simply place the orange spacer between the HAVEN in the locked position and the door. The distance of the orange spacer is the right distance between the door and HAVEN. Draw a long line on the floor to outline the front section of HAVEN. You will use this as a guide to place the HAVEN during installation.
Now, we need to determine if HAVEN is connecting with enough of your door to make it fully secure. With the gate in the up position and spaced correctly from the door, measure how much the lock overlaps with your door. HAVEN needs to be touching at least .25 inches of your door to be fully secure. If the lock is not touching that amount of the door, you may need to increase the height of the lock by using one or more RISERS. For more information on RISERS, please click here.
If you have an adjustable threshold, we recommend raising the height of the threshold to its highest level that doesn't impede the opening and closing of the door.
Ensure that the gate is lowered and place the spacer in the center of the lock as indicated in the above photo. If your door cannot open over your unit, you will need to complete Lesson 1-3: Shortening Your Door after this section.
Use a measuring tape to find center of your door. Mark the center of your door with a pencil. The center of HAVEN should be lined up with the center of the door. When you install HAVEN, make sure the lock is centered on the this mark on the door.
With a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the cover from the HAVEN Lock gate by unscrewing four scews on front of the gate.
After you have installed Haven, you have the option of weatherizing the unit so that it last many years. We would advise that you take the extra time and resources to do so. Haven has been design to withstand a ton of punishment, but that doesn’t mean the area surrounding Haven will be able to survive years of use, especially in a moisture-heavy environment like a front door threshold.
The primary enemy for Haven and your front door area is Moisture. We need to make sure any gaps in the flooring are filled so no moisture can get into your subfloor. Moisture can cause warping and will degrade the strengths of your flooring. In other words, moisture is very bad.
In addition to protecting your floor and subfloor, we will also walk through protecting your Haven lock itself from excessive moisture and salt (for all you snowbirds).
